BOARD OF EDUCATION.

♦ — The North Canterbury Board of Educa^. tion met this morning ; present — Messrs D. Buddo, M.H.R. (Chairman), J. Rennie, D. M'Millan, T. S. Weston, M. Dalziel, , H. W. Peryman, T. W. Adams and C. A. C. Hardy, M.H.R. The Buildings Gommittee reported on a number of repairs. and similar works to schools in the district. The Chairman of the Board had reported the settlers' acceptance of the offer of an aidted school at Hekeao Settlement. It was considered that, pending th© erection of a small school, for which the Clerk of Works was instructed to prepare plans, the settlers ' should procure a building suitable, for carrying on the school, which, it was understood, was available. :The report was adapted. The Appointments Committee reported thiat Miss Margaret Leversedge had been recommended for appointment "as mistress \at Little River. The following rosignaitions had been . accepted: — Mr R. Mounsey, . roaster at View Hill ; Miss S. A. Buck, mistress at Newlands ; Miss J. Stewart, mistress at Done, and Miss Margairet Leversedge, mistress at Kirwee. The Board was recommended to express its appreciation of the long and faithful services rendered by Miss Stewart, of Doric, as a teacher in the district. Consideration of tha resignation of the mistress at Okuti Valley was held over, pending a reply from the local committee. The Lyttelton Committee had asked that the Truant Officer might be allowed to conduct cases on behalf of the committee, so that it might receive the fines. It was regretted that the Board oould not see its way to depart from the existing arrangement under the new Act. The headmaster ait Woolston had written, strongly supporting the School Committee's proposal to appoint a pupil-teacher in place of an additional assistant, and to increase the salary of the first assistant mistress. The matter had been left for the Boa.rd when it considered the report of the Special Committee, in the meantime the opinion of the Inspector to be obtained on the point involved. The report was adopted. The Opawa Committee forwarded an account for £65 for improving the school grounds, and explaining why the expenditure was incurred. It was decided, on the motion of Messrs Weston and Peryman, that the Board regretted that members of the committee had not fallen in with the Board's suggestion to withdraw their resignations, and trusted' that they would see their way to do so, as the Board could not Consider the question of expenditure unless there was a committee to deal with it. The Chairman stated that three applications had! been received for the position of swimming instructor, and the committee appointed would make a selection. The Chairman was authorised to sign Normal School training certificates. Several questions of minor importance were dealt with.
