The Chinese tortured a British officer captured at Kalagan for four days before putting him to death. Fifty thousand pounds worth of property, owned by suspected Chinese, was destroyed by the Kalagan expedition, whicli proved ineffective. Only three unimportant officials were executed, tlhe charge against them being that they were among the instigators of the Tsinang massacre. A German detachment "has been sent against a big force of regulars at Tangchow. The Russians at Neuchang have imposed a land tax of 3 per cent on Chinese landholders.
