THE GHURGH OF ENGLAND TEMPER- ' ANCE SOCIETY — LESSON ON STRONG DRINK. (By H. Stewart' Slade.) The subject of this lesson is taken from I. Esdras iii., 18, to the end. As you know, the books of Esdras are the two first books of the Aprocrypha. The word aprocrypha is derived from the Greek word which signifies secret, or hidden; and the Apocrypha ia so called because there is d6ubt as to the authenticity and . genuineness of the- books. But our Church says, with St Jerome, " that the Church doth read them for example of life, and instruction of manners." Let us try very briefly to see. what instructions we can gather on this great subject of temperance, which should interest., every ■Christian man and woman. (Read I.
