The Dowager-Empress was veoy affable in her demeanour to the wives of foreign Ministers, and embraced the visitors, who were treated with great pomp andceremony, and entertained at luncheon. The reception has had a marked effect upon the public. The British Government has secured a concession of territory in the neighbourhood of Neu-Chang. The French Minister at Pekin. informed live Chinese Government that pending fur ther efforts to secure the release of the French missionary captured by the Szechuan rebels, a respite had been granted with regard to the recent threatened invasion unless the missionary was released within a few days.
