He adheres, however, to his previous decision regarding tho use of the long rifle, though he wiU allow the men to discard the bayonet. An inspection of the Christchurch City Guards and Imperial Rifles was held atthe drillshed last night by ColoneLPole-Penton, the Commandant of tho New Zealand. Forces. Colonel Gordon, Major Day and Adjutant-Captain Hobday were present, and Staff Sergeant-Major Barritt was in attendance. The City Guards mustered forty-one rank and file, under Captain Creawell, Lieutenants Sandford and Bishop being ilso on parade. The corps was putthrough. manual, physical and company drill byvits sfficers and non-commissioned officers. In some departments the work done w__b liardly up to the high standard which usually characterises this corps. The Imperial Rifles, under Captain .harlewood, Lieutenants Marciel.and Holierness being also on parade, was next nspected, and performed similar work. ?ifty-two men answered to the roll callj tnd for a newly-formed company-the work lone was creditable.
