CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
A meeting of the committee of the j Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday ; ' present — Messrs-E. W. Roper (president), in the chair, W. Recce, A. H. Turnbull, H. Qnane, G. T. Booth, A. E. G. Rhodes, Isaac Gibbs, W. Devenish Meares, E. C. Brown and W. Chrystall. Apologies for non-attendance were received from Messrs Kaye, Wayinouth and Simms. Correspondence was read from other i Chambers, promising support in the matter of reduction of cable rates and the establishment of the. Pacific cable with Great Britain, vid Canada. It was resolved — " That the Right Hon the Premier be respectfully asked to communicate with the Agent-General, requesting him to urge upon the 'All Red Conference ' in London the necessity of establishing cable communication with Australia and New Zealand via Canada." Correspondence from the Sydney Chamber on the subject of bills of lading was referred to the Exporters and Importers Sectional Committees to report to the next meeting of the General Committee. It was decided to revise the scale of mercantile charges adopted by the Chamber seme years ago. It was resolved — " That this committee learns with satisfaction that the Government intends to proceed with construction work on the Springfield end of the Midland railway line, and trusts that the work will bejpushed on with all possible energy and rapidity."
