[Pbb Press Association.! mv ,-__ ~ AUCKLAND, March 11. -ihe City -Council resolved to levy a rate of threepence in the £ for charitable aid. It was stated that of the present rate of 2s in the. £, Is 9d was swallowed up in interest on loans, and that the finance was going to the bad at tho rate of £5000 a ! year. It transpired in the case of suicide of Jas. B. Pairs that the threatened execution of a judgment summons in connection with the ' Warden's Court, and an impending difficulty with regard to the purchase and re-sale of mining shares, brought matters to a climax, and deceased, who appears to have long since meditated self -destruction, had not courage to face his troubles. The steamer Cape Otway takes 43 passengers from New Zealand for the Klondike goldfields and 200 in aE. The New Zealanders are principally from the south. Lady Ranfurly has intimated to Professor Schmitt-that she will continue tbe:m_dals for competition at the School of Music, which were given in succession by Lady Onslow and Lady Glasgow.
