BOROUGH COUNCILS.

SUMNER. -^ The fortnightly meeting of this r Council was held on Wednesday evening ; present — The Mayor and Councillors Monck, Mills, Graham and Heskett. Councillors Hanmer and "White sent apologies for absence. The time for receiving tenders for clearing gorse from the esplanade and pound reserve was extended to next meeting. It was resolved — "That property owners who have received notice to remove gorse fences and barbed wire, and to cut fences back to their frontage, be again informed that unless the work is carried out within seven days proceedings will be taken against them." An application was received from S. "Whittington to quarry some stone piles (about 100), on the Christchurch side of the cutting, where the road is narrow. It was resolved that the request should be granted, provided all spalls and rubble taken out were placed in a heap, to become the property of the Council ; the work done to be under the supervision of the surveyor. The Finance Committee reported receipts since last .meeting to have been -337 2s 8d; credit balance at the bank _621 14s 6d. Accounts for £44 14s 3d were passed for payment. The Surveyor was instructed to attend to some repairs to roads at Clifton. It was resolved that steps should be taken to compel persons advertising on the rocks and Council's property, to remove such advertisements, or proceedings will be taken against them forthwith. A permit was granted to E. jSpear to drive his donkeys on the public r streets between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 3.30 p.m. The hawkers' licensee granted to M. Gimblett and J. Austin were confirmed. Councillor Mills moved — " That if owners of land facing . the junction of Coienso and Hardwicke Streets are willing to pay the usual proportion Of cost of formation, the Council will haye the work put in hand at once." The meeting then, closed.
