ROAD ROARUS.

• HEATHCOTE. - The monthly meeting of this Board was held on March 4; present — Messrs M'Haffie (chairman), Malcolm, Martin and Mace. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows' — From the Church Property Trustees offering to give land at Duk9's corner, "Woodhain Uoad, for the purpose of widening the existing road, provided the work of widening were proceeded with at once. The land was accepted on the conditions stated. From the Treasury, advising that the balance of subsidy due for 1596-97, -325, had been paid into the Board's account. From the Government Valuation Department, advising that the Government valuation rolls would bo available for the purpose of local rating for the next financial year. It was resolved that application should be made for a copy of the standard roll, as required by Sections 9 and 10 of the Government Valuation of Land Act, 1896. From Mr R. Walker, Bromley, claiming damages for fences destroyed by cattle depastured on the Canal Reserve by permission of the Board. It was resolved that Mr Walker's letter should be forwarded to the Woolston Borough Council, which liad let the reserve for grazing purposes. A petition that had been forwarded to the Halswell Road Board, asking for repairs to the Governor's Bay Boad, was received from that body. The member for St Martin's ward pointed out that extensive repairs had already been made on this road, the renewal of culverts alone costing -360 ; that the whole expense of maintaining the four miles of hill road was borne by the St Martin's ward and Halswell Road Board, to which the road was of little benefit. However, representatives from Halswell Road Board would be invited to inspect the road, and if further work was considered necessary he would ask permission to put such work in hand. The Chairman reported that the whole of the rates for the current year had been collected, and that the credit balance at the bank was .£719. Accounts amounting i to .£6O were passed for payment.
