PICNICS.

♦ The annual picnic of the employes of the Lyttelton Times was held at Mr Birdling's estate at Lansdowne on Saturday, and afforded an apportunity for a most enjoyable outing, of which some three hundred people took advantage. Ten drags were called into requisition for the conveyance of the bulk of the party, while a large number travelled by bicycles, and private traps. A full sports programme was carried out, and the children were presented with an abundance of toys. The success of the day wa3 greatly enhanced by the attention shown to the party by Mr and Mrs Birdling, who, in addition to providing the ground and giving three prizes, did all in their power to assist the party. Three hearty cheers were given for the hosts at the close of the picnic. The following is the prize list :—

The annual treat of the Sefton State ' school was held on Friday in the Sefton Domain, and was attended by a large number of children, parents and friends. ' Mrs j Robert Lewis presided over the xofreshments. Cricket, racing, tug-of-war and other games were gone through duriug the day. School prizes were also distributed, and all seemed to enjoy themselves thoroughly. Three cheers were given for Mrs Lewis and three for the committee and the teacher. In the evening a" social " was held in the Town Ball, and dancing and games were kept up till 2 o'clock a.m. The employes of the Timaru Freezing Works had a holiday on Saturday for the purpose of holding their annual picnic. This year they went to Waimate by the morning train-; and the excursionists numbered about 300. They had a beautiful day fqp / the excursion. Possibly the holiday d'n Saturday had some effect on the previous day's work, when a record tally, of the works of 2476 sheep and lambs slaughtered \rasput up. The scholars of the Fendalton State school had their annual excursion on Friday to the Leithfield sea beach. The party went by train to Balcairn and walked to the beach, a distance of over* three miles. ■
