NEW BRIGHTON.

An ordinary meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council was held last evening ; present — the Mayoi (Mr E. C. Bishop) and Councillors Wiuny, M'lntyro, Eowe, Thomson, Owles, Glanville and Marshall. A letter was read from Mr H. 0. D. Meares forwarding a plan of proposed New Brighton extension in the direction of €lydevale. The Mayor said that the plan had received the approval of the local governing body before tho Council came into existence. After discussion .the matter was referred to the Works Committee, to report upon at next meeting. A letter was read from Mr J. Jarinan offering his services as 'inspector of slaughter-houses. It was decided not to make any appointment at present. Several offers of premises for temporary offices for the Council were received, and the Works Committee was requested to inspect the premises and report to the ensuing meeting. The Mayor offered to present the Council with a quarter-acre section in George Street for the purpose of erecting permanent offices. The offer was accepted with thanks. Councillor M'lntyre suggested that application should be made to the Selwyn County Council to vest in the borough the reserve standing in its name. This was agreed to, and a deputation was appointed to wait upon the County Council at its next meeting. Councillor Winny suggested that the Eawhiti Domain Board should be asked to hand over the New Brighton recreation reserve to the Council, and this was agreed to. ' . Councillor M'lntyre gave notice to movo at next meeting — " That a petition be prepared under Clause 35 of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1886, praying that the foreshore, for the whole sea frontage of the borough, be vested in the Council." Councillor M'lntyre also gave notice to move—" That the New Brighton Domain Board be requested to hand over to the borough the New Brighton Park." The Council then went into committee to consider the appointmont of a ( town clerk, and also to decide what his duties should be. On resuming, it was reported that it had been decided to advertise for a clerk and overseer, at the salary of ■£52' per annum. The question of appointing a borough solicitor was postponed, and after dealing with a good deal of departmental business, the Council adjourned until March 2.
