WELLINGTON NEWS.

[Per Press Association.!

WELLINGTON, Jan. 5.

The Eketahuna railway extension ie expected to be so far finished within a fortnight as to permit goods to be carried to Pahiatua ; and by the end of March ib will be ready for passenger traffic. The Northern Trunk line is now finished as far as the Porortarao Tunnel.

Further census returns show that just half the population is under twenty-one years. In former years it was larger, but the elder people are steadily increasing in proportion to the whole population, and young children are stationary. Those over sixty-five have increased from 14,342 in 1891, to 20,750.

The remains of tho late Captain Car den of the ship Soukar was buried at* Karori this morning. There was a large attendance of captains aud officers of vessels in port, as well as representatives of shipping and mercantile firms. The body was buried close to where Captain Kelly, of the ship Nelson, lies. It is a strange coincidence that Captains Carden and Kelly were both in charge of sailing ships of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, and both died in Wellington, Captain Kelly on Jan. 3, 1893, and Captain Carden on Jan. 3, 1897.
