THE POLICE FORCE.

A short .time back the Minister of Defence (says the Auckland Herald) increased the police force by twenty-four men, only seven of whom are taken from the Permanent Militia, the rest being principally sons of settlers, engaged in civil pursuits. An endeavour was also made to prevent an undue proportion of single men in the force, and to leaven it with a fair proportion of young married men. The reports of the inspectors at the chief centres of population, to which the new men were sent, is to the effect that the last batch of recruits is the best that they have had for some time past, and their conduct satisfactory.
