AN UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE

AN ADVENTUEE AT MOUNT COOK. [From Our Correspondent.] TIMAEU, Jan. 4. Mr G. E. Triggs, of Messrs Ballantyne and Co., and. Mr F. Cullmann, booteaker, had an unpleasant experience on Mount Cook last week. Arriving at the Hermitage on Monday, and Mr Fyfe, the guide, being away with othere, they went up the Tasman, directed by Mr Coaley, coachman, and shown part of the way by him. They camped for the night in the Ball hut, were up early on Tuesday morning, and after spending some hours on the Tasman Glaciei*, essayed to cross over to the Hooker by the Ball Pass, starting about G a.m. They did not even keep together, Mr Triggs getting ahead of his mate. Mr Cullmann overtook Mr Triggs at the snowline, and they agreed to keep together, biit again Mr Triggs got ahead. Mr Cullmann overtook him again at 4 p.m., and found that Mr Triggs had injured one leg considerably by a long slide over the snow and ice. This was 6000 ft to 7000 ft up. Mr Cullmaiin started down to the Hermitage for help, and got stuck up all night by the Hooker Eiver, and reached the Hermitage at 5 a.m. Mr Fyfe had gone out to the Tasman at daylight to look for them and got their tracks, but lost them in mist. Drßowe, of Timaru, fortunately was at the Hermitage, and with Mr Vv'ray, S.M., Mr Eoss, the housekeeper, Mr Cullmann, and another went for Mr Triggs, who, it was found, had painfully made his way three-quarters of the way down the range. The party could not sarry him much owing to the roughness and steepness of the ground, but they helped him all they could, and theHermitage was reached at 2 p.m. The night had been rainy, and Mr Triggs had passed some weary hours. Dr Bowe did all he could for him, but says that he will be unable to get away for two or three weeks.
