FREETRADE IN LABOUR.
Speaking at a meeting of the Christchurch National Association last night, Mr T. Mackenzie, the member for Clutha, eaid that many of the laws of the colony were such that no'one Was disposed td patois mbneyintoany industry. Take, forinstafcce, the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration ji-cb, under which they placed in thehands of the Judges of the Supreme Ctourt the fltial power to fix the rate of wages which Bhofild be paid t6 thd&e who were employed. If a man started an industry in New Zealand he had to face competition from the, Old Country and elsewhere, and he would be unwise to engage in such industry under present circum&tances. As long as an employer pays a man a fair day's wage for a fair daj?s work, that should and would satisfy the worker.
