The returns prepared by the officers of the Agricultural Department, under the Agricultural and Pastoral Act, 1895, Bhow the following numbers of stock in Canterbury :— Cattle -Bulls 1410, steers over two years 11,134, cows and heifers for dairy purposes only 33,996, cows and heifers for breeding only 1543, heifers over two years intended for dairying 2463, heifers intended for breeding only 866, cows or heifers intended for fallowing 4094, steers or heifers under two years not otherwise enumerated 40,189 ; total 95,695.' Horses —Thoroughbred 943, hunters and haokneys 6488, carriage and trotting 3200, light ordinary 12,091, draughts 22,187, ponies under fourteen hands 1231, muleß and asses 94; total 46,234. Pigs— Boars 804, barrows and sows 64,481 ; total 65,285. Sheep (not including this year's lambs) 4,650,317.
