TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council was held on Saturday night for the purpose of receiving a deputation from the Progressive Liberal Association appointed to discuss with the Council the question of sweating as it is carried on in Christchurch at the present time. Evidence was adduced to show that the evil is being practised to a large extent in the grocery business. Several cases were also cited to show that, the conditions under which the Employes in other businesses were working were anything but satisfactory. It was resolved that the matter should stand over for a full meeting of the Council to determine what steps should be taken to cope with the evil,
