STEAMER ON FIRE,

SPLENDID BEHAVIOUR OF THE PASSENGERS.

[Special to Press Association.] MELBOURNE, Jan. 13,

The steamer Cintra, which left yesterday for Western Australia, returned to Portland on fire. Flames were discovered in the forward hold when the vessel was thirty miles out, and her head was immediately turned to the shore, and the boats were got in readiness for an emergency. The steamer Bulimba, which was in the vicinity, went to the assistance of the Cintra and took off some of the steerage passengers. The Cintra steamed to an anchorage, and after three hours' fighting the flames were subdued. It is impossible to ascertain the amount of damage, but between fire and water it must be large. The vessel had 560 passengers on board, and considerable excitement prevailed; but they all behaved splendidly, especially the women, and no panic occurred. The outbreak is supposed to have been caused by stowaways smoking amongst the passengers' luggage.
