RANGIORA.

The monthly meeting of the Eangiora Borough Council was held last night ; present — The Mayor and Councillors Cone,' Carmichael, Good, Graham, Sansom, Jennings and Eoberts. Apology was made for the absence of Councillor Foster. Correspondence was read : — From the Ashley Eoad Board respecting- bringing the main stream of the Ashley under the traffic bridge, and asking the Council to reconsider its decision not to contribute towards the cost of the work unless relieved of any liability in the event of damage that might be occasioned by the diversion of the stream. It was resolved that the Board, be informed that the Council would not depart from its previous decision. From the Chairman Canterbury Fire Underwriters' Association, drawing attention to a defective iron chimney on premises next to Institute Hall. It was decided to request the owner of the property to have the chimney made safe atonce. The Fire Brigade Committee reported that a bell of 6cwt for fire alarm purposes had been ordered from Messrs A. and T. Burt, Dunedin. The committee recommended that additional fire wells be sunk at the following places, viz., one on the weot side of Ashley Street, opposite the Salvation Army Barracks; one on the north side of High Street, almost opposite the Institute Hall ; one on* the south side of High Street, at Mr H. Stephens's corner, and one on the east side of Victoria Street south, opposite the vinery corner (William Street) . The report was adopted. A petition to the Minister .of Labour to proclaim that all shops in the borough should close at 9 p.m. on Saturdays, was presented for the Council's certificate that it bore the signatures of three-fifths of the shopkeepers. There being forty-eight name 3on tho petition and sixty-one shopkeepers in the borough, the necessary certificate was given on the motion of Councillor Good, seconded by Councillors Blackett ; Councillors Cone and Eoberts objecting. The receipts for the month were reported to be .£114 15s 6d, and the bank credit balance J>lsl lss. Accounts amounting to MS 2s 2d were passed for payment. Tho Clerk was instruoted to revise the burgess roll. Councillor Good reported on behalf of _ the Finance Committee that the solicitor's opinion was in favour of the Council's claim against the Mandeville and Eangiora Eoad Board for a refund of an auctioneer's license fee paid on behalf of Mr J. G. E. Winsloe by Miles and Co., the auctioneers' principal place of business being in the borough. It was decided to invite tonders for leasing the borough reserve for seven, ton or fourteen years, Councillors Foster, Graham and Cone to revise the conditions. The meeting then closed.
