DRAINAGE BOARD.

The Christchurch Drainage Board met at 2.30 p.m. to-day; present— Messrs John Deans (chairman), G. M'lntyre, E. N". Taylor, C. Palairet, S. Swart, E. Hill Fisher, C. Burgess, W. M'Alpine and H. Crooks.

On the motion of Mr Crooks^ seconded by Mr Palairet, Mr Deans was re-elected chairman.

The secretary and treasurer's report was as follows : —

Amount of rates received since last meeting, .£2635 2s 9d ; received from other sources, .£2l. ■ Expenditure since last meeting, rate account, .£391 9s lOd. Amount of rates outstanding— lß93, £64 12s 6d; 1894, .£l2O 10s 10d ; 1895, .£5064 15s 3d. Amount of 1895 rates collected to date, .£14.127 11s sd. Amount of debit balance, .£2460 12s Id.

Statement pf 1895 rates levied, collected and outstanding in each district to date : —

The Engineer's report dealt with a complaint as to the flooding of the North Eoad between Papanui and Styx, and the backing up, of the water on adjoining lands. It had been suggested that the drainage should be taken north along the railway line to Preston's Creek. This would necessitate considerable expense for new works. .

. ..It was decided that the Engineer's report on the matter should be forwarded to the Eiccarton Eoad Board.

Certain necessary repairs to. the pumping station, recommended by the Engineer, were agreed to. ,

It was decided that the sewer, pipe on the south side of the North Belt, between Colombo and Durham Streets, should be attended to at once, as the engineer stated that this section had sunk. .

Applications from the Limvood Council and the Avon Eoad Board for remission of certain drainage rates, on the ground of the occupants' poverty, were agreed to.

Messrs Morrison and Dunn were reappointed examiners of plumbers. A letter was received from Mr C. H. Walter, complaining of the state of Mr Sawing's drain in Marshlands, and it was decided that the necessary work to remedy the matter be done.

Garrison Library. — The annual meeting of the members of the Christchurch Garrison Library will be held to-morrow evening. Captain Hobday will give a paper on defence.

Industrial Association. — Mr E. C. Bishop has been nominated for the office of President of the Industrial Association. Mr H. B. Kirk, the retiring President, does not intend to seek re-election.

Queen's Cadets. — This corps will parade on Wednesday evening next, at 7 p.m. sharp, in the drillshed, Cashel Street, for inspection by Colonel Fox. A good muster is urgently requested.

Working Men's Co-operative Society. — A special general meeting of the Christchurch Working Men's Co-operative Society was held last evening at the Oddfellows' Chambers. There was a fair attendance of members, Mr J. Higgins, president, occupying the chair. Alterations were made in the rules in the direction of having halfyearly instead of quarterly balances and : stock-taking, and also of extending cominitteemen's term of office to two years.

Dbuidism. — The new hall of the Oak of Sydenham Lodge will be opened by the D.G.P., Bro W. Bailey, at eight o'clock tomorrow evening.

An old man has died at Odessa, leaving four millions of roubles to his four nieces. In order to check anything like pride in the fortunate ladies, he stipulates that previous to receiving the money they are to work for fifteen months either as domestics, chambermaids, or washerwomen. The ladies have gone into domestic service, and ■within a few Aveeks received nearly one thousand offers of marriage.
