POLITICAL NOTES.

[»BOX OUB OWN COBRESrONDIHT.] WELLINGTON, August 28 PETITIONS. The petition of the Canterbury Women's Christian Temperance Union for an amendment of the divorce laws and other reforms, has been referred to the Government for consideration. A largely signed petition from residents of Nelson was presented to-day by Mr Graham, praying that bottle licenses should not be abolished as proposed under the Licensing Bill, but be retained or, at least, be referred to the looal option vote. , The petitioners aver that the licenses are a great convenience to those, and especially females and domestics, who have a reluctance to go to hotels for liquor. Numbers of petitions continue to be presented in favour of scripture reading, nnder a strict conscience clause, in public I schools.
