Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
o A meeting of the committee of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held this afternoon at the City Council Chambers ; present — Rev J. Hosking (chairman), Mra Julius, Mrs Irving, Messrs W. Prudhoe, D. Duncan, J. H. Parker, M. Murphy (honorary secretary), R. Foster (assistant secretary and inspector). Mr Murphy stated that the annual report waa being printed, and would soon be ready for distribution. The Inspector said that, as instructed, he had written to the Dunedin, Wellington and Auckland Societies with regard to various matters, but had not yet received any reply. He reported that during the paßt month he had visited Rangiora, Kaiapoi, Lyttelton, Summer and New Brighton, and also the saleyards. He had paid especial attention to the tram and coach horses; the former were well cared for, and in no caße overworked. Among the coach horses there were a good many old horses, but, with a few exceptions, he thought they were well cared for. There was a marked improvement since last month in the horses engaged in carting road metal. A case of a woman who waa alleged to have fatally wounded a dog with a knife was reported by the police. A summons had been issued by the Sooiety's honorary solicitors, Measra Stringer and CresawelL* The inspector had given nineteen cautions in cases of cruelty as follows : — Horses thirteen, cattle two, pigs two, poultry two, dogs one. The subscriptions collected were &i, and the balance in haad waß £8 6a. The report was adopted. Messrs Nalder and Papprill were appointed the Society's honorary solicitors at Kaiapoi. After some other business had beta dealt with, the meeting terminated.
