Education Board.

The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Education Board waa held yesterday; present — Mr J. Jackson (chairman), Bers G. Barclay and J. White, Messrs W. G. Graham, J. Talbot and M. Gray. The Chairman stated that from one end of the district to the other schools had been closed for weeks together by snow lying a foot deep, and this had considerably affected the attendance in the district. On the motion of Mr Barclay, it waa resolved to have plana prepared for an addition to the Waimate District High School. A letter from the Minister of Education opposed the raising of the Geraldine school into a district high school, on the ground that as the staff is at present organised tho teaching power in the primary school would be too weak if the head-master took charge of the secondary instruction. Mr Barclay moved that the Timaru side school should be made an independent school from Jan. 1, and that an early charge upon the next building grant Bhould be the erection of a teacher's residence in the school ground. The motion waa opposed, and Mr Barclay withdrew it for the present. The Inspector submitted a report on the pnpilteachera' annual examination. Thirty-nine pupil- teachers were examined, and all passed but one. Ten candidates not in employment also sat, and seven of them passed. The results of the examination were considered very satisfactory. The Truant Officer's report was considered satisfactory-. Messrs Keith, Bowie and Smith, representing the committee of the Schools Conference, waited on the Board to request that the regulations regarding "aided schools." should be amended by reducing the number of scholars (now twenty-five) at which the Board takes full liability for the schools.
