A NEW PEST IN SOUTHLAND.

The Western Btar reports :— " We learn that opossums are now exceedingly numerous io the Long wood Forest— in fact, too numerous for many orchadists, who are continually complaining about their vexatious depredations in the gardens, the animals particularly relishing the burfe of apple trees. Denuded of tbid the trees soon die. The opoßßumß are protected,- but we think the time has arrived when there should be an open Beacon for hunting them, even if the society restricted the killing of them to the holders of licenses. We have been assured that it would be impossible to exterminate them, as they have now got a good hold in places almost inaccessible to man. We commend this matter to the serious con* sideration of the Acclimatisation Society.
