BOARD OF GOVERNORS

The usual monthly meeting of the Board of Governora of Canterbury College was held yesterday afternoon j present— Mr F. de C. Malet (in the chair), the Hon W. Montgomery, Messrs H. E. Webb, W. Chrystall, E. von Haaßt, F. D. S. Neave, R. W. Fereday, R. Weatenra, T. W. Stringer, T. S. Foster and Captain Garsia. Apologies for absence were received from the Hona J. T. Peacock and W. C. Walker and Mr B. Beetham. Before proceeding with the business the Chairman announced that his Excellency the Governor and the Countess of Glasgow would visit the Lincoln School of Agriculture on Friday next. The Chairman, in mentioning the resignation by the Hon E. C. J. Stevens of his seat on the Board, expressed tbo opinion that a member having once resigned could not withdraw his resignation, and could p not be reinstated in any other way than by re-election; The decision of the Board's solicitors on the point was also read, to the effeot that Mr Stevens ceased to be a member when he placed his resignation in the hands of the Eegistrar on Oct. 23 last, and that.a member could not withdraw his rea ; gnation, neither could the Board refuse to accept it. __Che Eegistrar then reported that there wStetwC; vacancies on the Board, caused by the death of Mr Bobb and the resignation of the Hon E. C. J. Stevenß, and on the motion of Mr von Haast it was resolved to hold an election to fill the vacancies, p nominations to bo mado on March 17, and the election to be held on March 31. A HIGH SCHOOL POE LTTTELTON. A letter was read from Dr Guthrie and Captain Willis, suggesting the establishment of a Girls' High School in Lyttelton, and pointing out the disadvantages under which the girls laboured in having to come through to the Christchurch school by train. The Chairman pointed out that, even if the Board were willing to establish a high school in Ljttelton, the funds would not permit of the work being undertaken at present. Mr Webb remarked tbat when the district school was established at Lyttelton it had been arranged that a head-master and mistress of particularly high attainments should be placed there, in order to allow of children passing through the seventh standard, and thus doing away with the necessity of a high school in the borough. On the motion of Mr Westenra, seconded by Mr Stringer, it was resolved— " Tbat the Board, while sympathising with the applicants, regrets that funds will not permit of the establishment of such a sohool." A LEGAL POINT. A letter was received from D. C. Chilton, who is now engaged at the Otago University, asking that bis name might be retained on the bookß of Canterbury College. The eatimates for the Boys' High School for tbe year were placed on the table and paaEed. APPOINTMENTS. The Chairman reported that Mr T. H. Jackson, formerly of Mill Hill School, London, had been appointed assistant master of the Boys' High School, out of fifty-eight applicants. I Mr W. Izard was appointed law lecturer at Canterbury College. Miss Henderson was appointed .teacher of cooking at the Girls' High School. LEAVE OF _BBENCE. Leave of absence was granted to the Hon W. C. Walker for six months, on account of absence from the Colony. After tho transaction of some routine business the proceedings terminated.
