THE LYTTELTON COMMITTEE.
' A largely attended meeting of the Lyttelton Committee of the Queensland Belief Fund was held in the Borough Council Chambers on Friday evening. The Mayor occupied the chair. The Bey E. E. Chambers, the Hon Seoretary, reported having interviewed the owners of the various Bteam launches with reference to the suggestion to hold an aquatic carnival in Rhodes Bay, as mentioned by Mr G. Agar. Messrs Cuff and Graham, on behalf of the Jane Douglas, Messrs Agar and Roberts, on behalf, of the Canterbury and Waiwera, had promised to place their Bteamera entirely at the disposal of the Committee. The owners of the John Anderson explained that their vessel would be away from Port during the early part of the day, but they would be willing to give what assistance they could in bringing the people back from the Bay. The, Secretary also explained that he had caused the matter to be brought up at a meeting of the Christchurch Begatta Club, where the idea had been favourably received by the representatives of the various clubs, and if the Committee thought well of the suggestion it could place itself in direct communication witn the various rowing clubs and ascertain what races they would support It was proposed to find trophies for the winning crews, but, of course, the value would not be great, nor did he (the Secretary) think that those engaging in the contests would expect much, considering the very worthy object for which the races would be promoted. Both the Corinthian and Canterbury Yacht Clubs had promised to arrange races in the Bay for the same day. It was decided to proceed with the matter of holding an aquatic carnival, and the date was fixed for Thursday, Maroh 16, on which day the usual weekly halfholiday will be kept in Lyttelton. The Secretary undertook to write to Mr Gardner for the use of the Bay on that date, and also to the various rowing clubs, asking for their support. ABub-Committee, consisting of Messrs T. L. Smith, C. Aachman, G, Diamond, P. Ealem and the
Secretary, was appointed to make the necessary arrangements. It was also agreed, on the motion of Mr I Gifford, that a monster concert should be ; held on the night of the carnival, in the Drillshed, if it could be procured, and the matter of making the necessary arrangements was left in the hands of Messrs J. T. Gifford, G. Dimond and W. Eadcliffe. Canvassers were appointed to canvass the town for cash and produce, and it was decided to turn the whole of the contributions into articles of clothing or produce. Mr Schumacher reported that during that day he had collected about £20, while Mr F. Ealem stated that he had succeeded in getting about £10 from the Wharf Labourers' Union. Mr Just was added to the Committee, and it was decided to ask his assistance in getting the school children to contribute toys, &c, for the little sufferers. Captain Willis waß appointed to collect from the shipping, and the matter of dividing the town into wards for canvassing purposes was left in the handß of the Mayor and Councillors. The meeting then closed.
