Christchurch Regatta Committee.

" ' ' ' ■*» , A meeting of the Chriatchnrch Begatta Committee waa held last night in the Canterbury Bowing Club'a boatshede; present— 'Mr J. 0. Jones (in the chair). Messrs F. D. Kesteven (Hon Secretary), F. W. Hobba (Treasurer), N. L. Macbeth, T. L. Smith, P. A. Laurie, Q. H. Mason, J, E. Evans, P. Triggß and H. Bowlker. Apologies were received for the absence of Messrs A. E. G. Ehodes and B. H. Bhodes. The Secretary of the Kaiapoi Begatta Committee wrote wibh reference to the proposal to hold next season's regatta at Kaiapoi. The conaideration of the letter was deferred till the general meeting is held. The Treasurer presented a number of accountß, amounting to £71 3a 9d, wbich were passed for payment. The rough" balance-sheet showed a loss of _£57 on the regatta. This was due to the small attendance and the increased expenditure caused through having two extra days and the cost attending the postponement of come of the events. The Chairman aaid that it would be necessary to consider the question of the Senior Fours. There had been a great deal of talk about the alteration of the poles at the starting place, and that they i had not been left as they were laid down by Higgins, who was employed by the. Committee to lay off the course. Mr Kesteven said he had gone down to, mark off the course at about eleven o'clock on Saturday morning, in Mr Lewin'a company.. They had found that theiide would be high at 5.56 at Lyttelton, and by their, calculation they reckoned it would be high at 6.30 at Kaiapoi. They I then found that the white flag on the north side was in a direct line with the Harbour Board's post, and they shifted the flag on the south side to mid-stream, in a line with the white flag. The Chairman Baid that Higgini*. had stated that the white flag had been shifted since he placed it in position. Mr Mason thought that aa no protest had been laid, it was useless to discußs the question. Even if a surveyor were employed to check the angle of the start bb it had been alleged that an alteration in the course had been made, he doubted if they could get evidence to support the contention. They could only expect to get a lot of contrary. evidence. ,-*',.. Mr M' Beth said the complaint waß that the race on Saturday had been Btarted at a different angle from that at which the race on Friday had been started. Mr Kesteven said that he and Mr, Lewin 'would not have shifted the south flag: to the Harbour Board's post had they not seen that the two posts were in the same line as they were previously. They had been obliged to move the south flag to ensure the boats keeping off the flats, as the tide would not be full at four o'clock. Mr Smith' moved — "That this Committee, after< hearing Mr Kesteven's explanation aa to the removal of the flag from the south bank to mid-stream, on the morning of the race for the Championship Fours at Kaiapoi, is perfectly satisfied with his action in the matter." Mr Mason seconded the motion, which was oarried unanimously. The prize list was then read over as follows;— Lyttelton Bowing Clnb— lst Championship Four-oar, _£50. Nutt's, and the Canterbury Bowing Club also secured Messrs Coates and Cos. Mr Smith said that the Secretary of the Lyttelton ; Queensland Belief Fund; bad asked him to suggest that a regatta should be held at Bhodes* Bay within a fortnight, for the benefit of the relief fund. JThe railway authorities and the steamers ptying in the harbour had agreed to allow a commission on the excursion rates' for the benefit of the fund, and there, would be ample opportunity for a sailing race as well as Beveral rowing events. Iv any, wind a two-mile course could be used, and in fine weather a three-mile course would be available. He had . brought the matter forward as the heads of the various Clubs were present. After a discussion, tbe Committee agreed to urge the respective Clubß to take up the matter, and. resolved, to .recommend the promoters to have the regatta on a Thuifßday afternoon, and toi confine this events to stump outriggers..
