A Clean Sheet.— There waa no business taken at the Chriatchurch Eesident Magistrate's Court this morning. H.M.S. Cubacoa.— For the last time thiß warship will be thrown open to visitors tomorrow. Daring the afternoon the s.s. Canterbury will run off to her at intervals. Ohoka and Eybeton Domain Board. — Messrs M. Dixon, S. Hopkins, R. Evans, E. Chapman, and R. Shepherd have been gazetted as forming the Oxford and Eyreton Domain Board. Obangbibm. — The monthly meeting of Walker's Purple Heroes, No. 24, L.0.L., is advertised to take place to-morrow evening in the Orange Hall, Worcester street. Several candidates for initiation are expected, and a full attendance is requested. Nobth Canterbury Football Club.— At a meeting of the above Club, held at Bangiora last night, it was decided to hold a social gathering early in July, and a Committee was appointed to carry out arrangements. St Albans Licensing Committee.— At the meeting of this Committee to-day there were three members present, viz.— Messrs J. Donald, J. Bell and Burt. The licenses for the two houses in the Borough were granted, with eleven o'clock as the closing hour. •

Fcbnitubb Salb. — Messrs Bowman and Son announce that they will conduct, within their rooms, to-morrow, a sale of aupsrior London-made furniture. The furniture was selected at the best London houses, including Maple and Co.'s, and ia ol good quality. SOUTHBBOOK FIOUB MILL. — MeBBM Boyd and Keir, the contractors for the re-erection of Mesßrs Moir and Co.'s flour mill at Southbrook, are pushing on rapidly with the work, the substantial concrete foundation necessary, and the well for the turbine, being about completed. The oatmeal kiln, which was only partially destroyed by the fire, will be in working order again in a few days.' The Patey Conc^ets.— The demand for tickets for the Madame Fatey Concerts has been the keenest known in Ghristchurch for many years. Before Messrs Milner and Thoinpßon'B Bhop opened this morning there were a number of would-be purchasers outside the building waiting their opportunity to buy tickets. Directly the shop opened a rush set in, and at halfpast twelve all the dress circle seats for the three concerts had been marked off.

Eackcotjbse. — The Committee of the North Canterbury Jockey Club is just now planting a cumber of trees round their racecourse to replace those which have either died from the drought or been destroyed by fire. The dryneas of the soil in the locality is rather against the growth of young trees, but when the pines once get a good start they will do well.

Average Statements. — We learn that sbepa will probably shortly be taken to dispute the validity of Messrs Mabin and Bendall's average statement per Banca. This vessel, with cargo for Lyttelton and other ports in New Zealand, arrived in Dunedin iv February last, after putting into Bahia to get rid of a mutinous crew. With the Leading Wind case in view adjusted, it seems a pity that average adjustments should lead to bo much complication and expense to those concerned. St Albans Liteeary SociETr. — The usual weekly meetiDg of the St Albans and Crescent road Musical and Literary Society was held in the St Albans schoolroom on Tuesday evening. There was a large attendance. The Eev W. Baumber (President) occupied the chair. The eubject of debate was " Is it desirable to extend the franchise to women ? " Mrs Shepheard opened in the affirmative, and was followed by Mr H. D. Pine in the negative. Atter some spirited discussion a vote was taken, which resulted decidedly in favour of the affirmative. During the evening several members and friends contributed musical items. New Brighton Loan. — Mr J. Patterson, Chairman of the Avon Eoad Board, and Mr Hickman, Clerk to the Board, were pasaengers by the s.s. Eotorua for Wellington yesterday, their object being to wait on the members of the House of Representatives respecting the above loan. '■ They will also be assisted by Mr E. Blake, M.H.R. for Avon, and other members of the House. It is to be boped they will succeed in their object, as the obtaining of the loan will allow of work being carried out which will give a large amount of em- ' ployment to the unemployed of Christ- j church if let, as it is understood it will be, in small contracts. Education Boaed. — A special meeting of the North Canterbury Board of Educa- j tion was held this morning ; present — Mr i T. S. Weston (Chairman), Messrs E. Meredith, T. H. Anson, P. Westenra, A. Saunders, E. G. Wright, W. Montgomery, J. Joyce and H. W. Peryman. The report of the Committee appointed to revise the regulations for the appointment of pupil teachers, was adopted after a few amendments had been made. A Select Committee brought up a report suggesting certain amendments which the Minister should be j asked to effect in the Act regulating the ' election of School Committees. Leave of absence during the Parliamentary Session was granted to Messrs Wright, Saunders, Joyce and Meredith, and the Scholarship Committee obtained an extension of time, in which to report, till Sept. 1. Presentation. — The male employees in every branch of the Farmers' Co-operative Association's Stores met last night at the Queen's Hotel, for the purpose of presenting Mr E. J. Jackman, manager of the grocery department, with a present on the occasion of his approaching marriage. 1 About forty sat down to an excellent

supper, provided by Mr Molloy. MrJ. R. Uoman, accountant, occupied the chair. After removing the cloth, the usual loyal and patriotic toasts were honoured, and the health of Mr Jackman and the future Mrs Jackman were heartily drunk, and he was made the recipient of a very handsome dinner service and opossum rug, the voluntary gift of his colleagues, who thus testified to the good opinion in which he is held by them. The

future health and happineßß of the couple being toasted, Mr Jackman replied. Mr

Turnbull, the manager, on behalf of the

employees, made the presentation. The

remainder of the evening was spent in harmony.
