The Waimakariri.
Once more we bavo something like the old warnings raised. The fierce river it seems, having been effectually stopped from breaking out in lha lower ! part of its course, has begun to j try ond worry through the shingle banks ! a little higher up, and at present threatens to pay tho Cathedral City a visit, nofcwith- ' landing the faith and works of the Biver | Board. But the Board has a foreman who I knows how to treat the formidable old I " Waimak." The best thing the Board can | do is to let him prepare a place for the ! floods to bank up their cushions of dead ! water afc the critical points, thus themselves doing the work of taking themselves into safe channels. A little cunning is worth much Scotch navigation. In justice to Mr Lambert wo hasten to observe that his proposal to help the liver to cut for itself a new channel has so much to recommend it, and 13 so cheap, as to be well worth trying.
