English Capital in Victoria.
• As counter-statements have been made by the rival newspapers in Melbourne on the question of the influx of English capital into Victoria, we have enquired from a gentleman resident in Christchurch, who has a relative employed in the Age Office, and who gave us the information we published on Saturday respecting the firm of Baron Rothschild and Son's large investments in that Colony, and find that we were correctly informed on the matter. Thig wealthy firm has a representative in the Colonies at present time, who is expected to pay New Zealand a visit shortly, and they have purchased large blocks of land, besides investing large sums of money on mortgage at rates which prove themselves acceptable to the borrowers, over seven millions of their capital being thus distributed. The gentleman who furnishes this information to his relative here is in a leading position on the Melbourne Age, and the 'latter is in an official position in this city, and the information (which, by the way, was communicated in a private form, or names would be published), can be relied on as genuine.
