UNION ROWING CLUB.

COCKSWAINS' PICNIC. The annual outing given by the Union Rowing Club to their cockswains, took place on Saturday afternoon at New Brighton. Fine weather prevailed, and the affair passed off most successfully under the able management of Messrs C. Allard and G. Mason., The efforts of the firstnamed gentleman to give the little felloes a thorough pleasure were fully appreciated, judging by the hearty manner in which he was cheered after the prizes had been distributed. The gifts, it may be mentioned, were selected more from a useful than an ornamental point of view, and each youngster was made happy by the possession of some treasure. There waa a good muster of older members of the Club, whose stentorian voices, so often heard along the river bank cheering on some crew, were raised on this occasion in all their pristine vigour in encouraging the lads to persevere. The Bports resulted as follows: — Swimming Eace, 30yds — M. Shand, 2sec start, 1 ; A. C. Hinge, 7sec, 2 ; W. E. Styche, scratch, 3. Pair-oared Eace, about 150 yds — First heat: S. Styche and F. Evans beat M. Shand and C. Mason. Second heat : T. Blakely and W. E. Styche beat W. Baxter and A. C. Hinge. Final heat : Blakely and Styche beat Styche and Evans. This was a keenly contested heat, the boats running neck and neck until just on reaching the winning post, when the winners came with a big spurt, and succeeded in heading their opponents by about a couple of feet. The race for losers of the first heat ended in favour of Shand and Mason. Although, owing to the tide being nearly full, the beach was not in good condition, the foot-races were successfully got off. The chief event was won by F. Evans, with J. Allard second. Afterwards the company adjourned to the hotel, where ample justice was done to the excellent spread provided by the host, Mr J. Patterson.
