Fire in Colombo Street.
Jus 1 : after 7 o'clock last evening, Mr G. West noticed one of the pictures in the window of Mr Makanini's tobacconist shop, next to the Golden Age Hotel, fall on to the biasing gas jet below. He at once gave the alarm, but the contents of the window, containing several light combustible articles, were soon in a blazo. Mr G. Merson, who was in the shop at the time, beat down the flames with a towel till a few buckets of water were brought, and soon removed the danger which threatened the shop. In the meantime, the alarm had been sent to the Fire Brigade Station, from the eleotrio box close at hand, and Superintendent Turton, and the Brigade and their engines, were soon on the spot, aa well as Inspector Pender and the police. Some difficulty was met with by Mr Turton in extinguishing the fire that had taken hold in the partition next the Golden Age Hotel, but this was eventually got over with the help of a pail engine. Mr Makanini's stock and fixings were insured in the South British Company for £300. The building, whioh belongs to Mr B. M. Morten, was, we believe, not insured.
