LTTTELTON HARBOUR BOARD.
An adjourned ordinary meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board was held yesterday afternoon in the Board's Ghristohurch offices j present— Mr 0. W. Turner (Chairman), and Messrs M. Dixon, B. Latter, J. D. Maopherion, 8. B. Webb, 0. B. Blaiiaton, O. Jones and the Hon J. T. Peacock. HiBBOtTB IMPEOTBMBNT OOMKITTBH. Eeport No. 28 of the Harbour Improvement Committee was brought up and eonliderei clause by olauae aa follows :-" You; Committee make the following recommendations :-(l.) That the penalties incurred by Mr William Williams for delay in completing his breastwork contract be reduced to £25. (2.) Thnt If r JCdmund Dtrbridge be employed as Inspector of Work*, at a salary of £4 per week, his engagement to be terminated on a week's notice.., (3.) That the salary of Mr Bojp, draughtsman, be increased to £4 per week, the addition to date from June 1 last. (4.) Tho Committee have accepted Mr Ellis' tender for iron bark piles and timber, at the average rate of 3s 44 per foot, run of piles, and 27* 6sd per 100 mperfioial f eet of squared . timber. -Governor's Bay jetty addition — (5.) | The Committee have given instructions to I havfl tho*« additions made, and the work is being carried out bj the contractor at schedule prices. Water supply pipes to dock.— (6.) Instructions have been given to accept the I proposal of the Borough Council to do tho ! work, provided the Board's liability is restricted to 1500 ft of piping, &c, tbe Counoil providing the further lengths required. (7.) (a) Improvement of dockyard ; (o) rails for working a crane rcund the (look ; (c) filling in of ballast ground on reclaimed land, 'l'he Committee recommend that tenders be invited for these works as soon as plans shall have been prepared. (8) The Committee suggest that consideration of the application from Lyttelton Borough Council to extend Voelas road through eeotion No. 8 on rechimed land be deferred." Ihe report as a whole was adopted. AOOOTTHTB. Accounts to the amount of £334 14s 7d w«re paised for payment. OOBAN STB AM BBS fVBABV. The letter from Wellington re this wharf was read, stating that no objection was taken, but tho Railway Engineer would have to be consulted with relerenoe to arrangements for railway traffic The Chairman said that it was fortunate bo many of the members of tho Board were at Wellington. He suggested the following resolution:— "That Metirs Wright, White, Allwright, Lee, and tho Hops J. T. Feaoock atid B. Biohardaon, who are in Wellington, be appointed a Committee to settle all details as to the proposed ooean steamers wharf, and to determine particulars of shed, &c, and that Mr Napier Bell be requested to put himself in communication with tho above Committee on his arrival ia Wellington, and to ask their instructions ; Mr Wright to be convener of the Committee." The Hon J. T. Peacock hoped the Board would be unanimous ia keeping to the Peacock wharf, as proposed, and moved — "That the Board adhere to their previous decision that the site of the proposed ocean steamers wharf Bhall be the present Peacock's wharf, as shown on the plan." Mr O. Jones seconded the motion, which was unanimously agreed to. Mr Webb moved tbe resolution suggested by the Chairman. Mr Dixon seconded the motion. IBONEAEI PILES, &0. On the motion of Mr Macpheraon, seconded by Mr Jones, the aotion of the Harbour Improvement Committee in accepting Mr Ellis' tender for ironbark piles and timber was approved. BLBOIBIO LIGHT BIPBBIMBNT. A letter from the Electric Light *nd Power Company was read, asking for an extension of two months for the experiment with the electric light, lha Company was fully assured of ultimate success, but wished to be allowed to have the wires overhead instead of underground. The Board went into Committee to allow of free discussion. It was stated that (he lights had been burning for 854S hours, at a cost of £154 9a 6d, or 4id per lamp per hour, and making allowance for a charge for water, whioh was heavier than necessary, and for the fact that several lamps had not been u»ed during a fortnight, the average cost would be loss thnn 4d per hour. Iho gas had cost £30 or £35 per month during the winter time, whereas the electric light sost about £70 per month ; of course with an immensely increased amount of light. A letter from tho New Zealand Shipping (Company was read, ttrongly urging the superiority of the eleolrio light. i Mr JHxon suggested th»t it might be advii* <
able to move the engine to some other site, ■ for tbe benefit of lighting the Borough. Mr Maopherson moved, and Mr Blakiston seoonded— '• That the application of the New Zealand Hleotrio Light and Power Company (Limited), as set forth in their letter of Jaly 18, be granted-" The Board then resumed, and the Chairman reported the oarr/ing of the above resolution. The meeting then adjourned to Wednesday, August 1, at 2.80 p.m., in Christohuroh.
