JfeBAULTiNG the Police.— John Lyndald, for assaulting Constable Hayea in the execution of his duty by endeavouring to rescue a prisoner on his way to the lock-up, was fined dßli or in default seven days' imprisonment. Wife DKaEUTiON. — Francis Doherty was charged with deserting his wife. Sergeant Mason asked that the accused should be remanded to Timaru. The prisoner said that ho never intended to desert his wife ; it was v, matter of impossibility for him (o do bo, as he had so much property in tho Colony. Ho applied to bo released on t>ail to appear at Timaru. Sergeant Mason said the prisoner had been on bail since yesterday, in the sum of £50. Mr Malot said that he appeared in the interest of tho National Bank of New Zealand, on whose application the warrant Lad been issued. Ho opposed tho application for bail, on the ground that an affidavit had been filed to tho effect that tho accused intended to abscond. Tho accused objected that Mr Malet had no tiatus in Court with regard to the case. The Bench decided to admit tho accused to bail, himself in £100, and two approved suraties of £00, to appear at the Resident Mngi*trate's Court Timaru, on Tuesday August 23. Labcenjt. — John Moadling was charged with the larceny of a puree containing 2s, the property of Richard Henry Laurie, at Lincoln on August 19. Tho prisoner pleaded "Not guilty." R. H. Laurie, a bricklayer residing at Lincoln, said that the prisoner slept in the same room with him in a house at Lincoln. Early on the previous morning, before it was light, witness was aroused by seine one feeling about hia pillow, where he kept his watch and purse, and ho saw the prisoner take up the articles. Wimees called out to awake tho inmates of tho house, and made a grab at tho watch, which prisoner dropped, but ho retained possession of the purao containing 2g. Witness struck a light, and soni'v- men cumo into tho room. The purao produced was tho one under tho pillow. A witness who said ho lived in tho houso with prosocutor and prisoner deposed that about 3.30 on tho previous morning ho was roused by hearing somo ono uhout out, and werifc to the room where prosecutor slept. Prosecutor told him that tho prisoner had taken his purse, and tried to lake his watch from Jiim. Witness found prisoner in tho kitchen psytly dressed. Constable Wealhorloy, stationed at Lincoln, deposed that from information received from the prosecutor ho wont to tho house where prisoner lived, and arrested him. Searched the prosecutor's bunk at prisoner's rcquost, but found nothing of the missing article. Subsequently prisoner searched the bunk in question, and produced (ho purse therefrom iv his hand. Witi:csa was tiiiv-j that the purao was not in tho bunk previous to prisoner searching it. Tho prisoner said he was quito innocent of tho charge.
