BRACH BANK FOR KOWAI PASS.
A well attended meeting was held at the Kowai Pass, Jan. 30, at Davis' Junction Hotel, to devise the best means for the establishment of a branch Bank. Mr Hugh Cassidv was voted to. the chair.
The Chairman stated that a great influx of . population had taken place during the past two years, which was principally attributable to the successful working of the Springfiold coul mine, as well as to other larjie works in progress. Probably in loss than a year from this time i.ho population would bo more than doubled, as the extension of the railway line from Sheffield to Kuwai Pass is anticipated to be finished inside that period, and it was most essential that a Branch Bank should be established. The Malvern Road Board a).on» had expended during the past two years about £11,000, and contractors and others, who were in receipt of payments frora. the Board were compelled to go to Chmtshurch for change before they could pay their employees.
Mr J- Hamilton proposed, Mr O'&Tally seconded, and it was carried unanimously--^ •" That it is absolutely nece&gary that a bra, nob. Bank be established at Kowfti Pass,"
It was also resolved J&at Mt H-* Dsries be requested to draw up a % petition ta the Manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Christchurch, for signature 1 of the inhabitants of the surrounding neighbourhood, requesting him to accede to the wishes af fhe meeting. A vote of thanks to the ©Hairman terminated the meeting.
