HILLSBOROUGH AND OPAWA. SCHOOL.

The annual picnic and distribution of prizes to the children of the above school took place on Friday last. The company met at midday in the sekpol grounds, and aftei* partaking of a hearty lunch, adjourned to Enlarge paddock near the- Opawa railway crossing, where games, races, and sports were- indulged in with the greatest zest. The members of the Com-

mittee had been very energetic in gathering subscriptions, and owing to the liberality of tho residents in the district they were enabled to aitot a considerable amount for prizes for the sports, &c, and a, still larger sum for prize-books. A pleasing feature in the day's entertainment was tho presence of a considerable number of old pupils — now young women and young men in employment — who enjoyed themselves as heartily as did their juniors. Many of the parents of tho ohildren and a number of the residents in the neighbourhood were present, and joined in the amusements. At 6 p.m. a start was made for the schoolroom, where Mr Gee had in readiness a most enticing repast in the shape of tea, cake, sandwiches, fruit, &c, to which all did ample justice. After tea Mr E.
