This Council met on Friday evening- last ; ■present — ths Mayor and Councillors Bbyd, .Cone, Good> Johnston, Luxton, sad Thoirne. ! The Town Clerk read thereply sentf, which- was satisfactory. — From thy Colonial Secretary,, acknowledging tbe receipt, of the Borough bylaws. — From Mrs SiddbnSj. stating that her Itoband hadbeen confined toInched for iv considerable time, and applying for* remission of her rafces. The application was? on She motion of Councillor- Cone, seconded by Councillor Luxton, unanimously agreed to. — From the Land Tax Valuer for the Borough, asking- for the requisite-infor-mation respecting the Council's property. After*- some discussion as to whetbe-r- thY Council -shonld< not be- exempted from supplying the infcrination, the Town Clerk-w as ordered to comply wifeh the request. — From Mr Thomas M'Eeown, applying for leave to erect" a scaffold in front of his building in Mariiefctstreetifhe inquired to do so. Councillor- Boyd moved, Councillor Luaton seconded-, and it was agreed, that the Borough Survayor be empowered to give the nseessary permission in all- similar cases to the present one.-. BEiMJrS&ION OF RATES. It was resolved, on the report of- the Town-Clerk-, to- remit Mrs Ward's ratse.- The Townderk alea stated that a verbal application had been made to him by Mr B. Mai;in for a- portion of his rates to be remitted, as a pariofthe land for which ho had beenrated" had been boM. Tha Mayor thought that undev-the circumstances of the ease they might be reduced,, if the-Council had- power to do so. Councillor Good thought it would form abad precedent ta think of reducing, them on these- grounds, as the ratepayers had every chanos of seeing that the ratebook was correct before -the rats- was struck. On the motion- of Councillor-Cono, seconded by Councillor fcfood, the report; was received and adopted. l-INAXCIAL. The Town ©lerk reported che, credit balance at the Bank, to, be £357 19s 7d, and laid a statement oa the table showing receipts for the past fortnight. He stated that £45 was due for races. It was agreed that he be instructed to sue for the araears. Accounts amounting to. £118 lls 7d were passed fo? payment. TENEHBS. Tenders were received from W. Swan and E.. HoqcT for the formation of Bay's road, and that of"R. Head was-, accepted. The question arose whether, in the face of the resolution carriodat last meeting respecting no work being done till the map and levels of the Bosough were completed, this work should be proceeded with. But it was deoided that no-time should be lost in getting the work compfcted. I Councillor Boyd was requested to inspect the cottage on the Borough jiroperty, with the Surveyor, with a view of seeing what should be- done to it to make it tenable for the horseke&per- prior to calling tenders for the work. BT-LAAVS. Councillor Boyd proposed, and Councillor Good seconded, — " That the By-Laws as published come into force in the Borough of Bangiora from and after Feb. 1, 1879." CONCRETE CHANNELLING. Councillor Thorne moved, Councillor Johnston seconded, and it was agreed, — " That in Councillor Burt's unavoidable absence, the motion standing in his name be adjourned till next ordinary meeting. NOTICE OP MOTION. Councillor Cone gave notice of motion- as follows, — " That the by-law caimng all closets and house-slops from going into the shingle and rendering the water used for drinking and household purposes unfit for use, be, onforced at once, and that provision for suitable pans or other arrangement for preventing the pollution of the water be at once introduced, and that some person willing to acaept the position bo appointed as nightman anpl scavenger for the Borough, subject to the price to be fixed by the Council for each kind of work, and such person to bo under tlua, control of the officer appointed to overlookthe same." The Council then adjourned.
