CHRISTCHURCH,

Christchurch fortunately escaped with very Jittle damage from yesterday's heavy norwest gale which blew over the city the greater portion of the day. During the afternoon •nearly the whola of the streets were strewn with* large and small branches of trees, which were being stripped from overhanging trees in all direction*, but no accident 'took place. A length of about six feet of the large -western window in St. John's' Church was blown in, and on Messrs Mites, Hassal, and <.*o. T g property alongside the railway, a 6tabh»3Qft by 25ft and 18ft high was torn off 'the piles and carried to a distance of 21ft. It now lies tloor upwards in the Gasworks road.
