THE NORTHERN DISTRICT.
Daring the greater part of Thursday night and the whole of yesterday a very heavy north-west gale blew'in the northern part of •the Province. No damage of any great •extent is recorded, though the wind -was as heavy as any experienced this genson, excepting that, at Oxford recently, which caused co much destruction of property. As a great .quantity of rain has fallen during the gale, it is expected that there will be a fresh in the Waimnkariri and a consequent stoppage of ■traffic on the railway. The river had not risen when oar despatch left mM, night.
