There is a strong feeling m Auckland at rthe delay in proceeding with the public works ■during the present flue weather, and a •monster public meeting is on the fty>. , j ;, • Probably no Auckland volunteers will go to fthe Rifle Association meeting at Nelson, ■owing to the refusal of Government; to issue regulation rifles to them similar to those held (by Southern volunteers. Government require Aucklanders to purchase those rifles if they wish to change the weapons they hare. Mr Coleman, solicitor, has been elected Mayor for Parnell. The Board of Education has received .an •intimation from the Minister of Education that £18,000 has been allotted for school buildings in this district. Fifteen chiefs and priests arrived from the Sing eounf ry en route from Raglan to open a Hauhau chapel in the Aotea district. At the Waste Lands Board meetiug, Mr Firth protested against the cancelling of Mr Broomhall's contract, sayin* that only one■third of the land was fit for small settlers, ■the remainder being hills or swamps requiring considerable outlay of capital. Two applications for land lor special settlement, one from Australia from anumber of Germans, were submitted to the Board. In both cases replies were sent to the effect that the Board haa no power, to set apart- land for such purposes. Grahamstown, Nov. 15. The King's Prime Minister writes to the Ohinemuri County Council asking them not to proceed with the road works through Tukumoki and other land for the present. WBttiN'ttToJf, Nov. 15. The District Court opened for the first time to-day, in the old Provincial; Council Chambers, owing to the bad oocommotLition at the R.M. Conrt. It is thought that the Court. will also be held in the same chambers as the District Court until such time as the new Courthouse is built. The Hinemoa, with the Governor, has arrived from Lyttelton. The Chamber of Commerce are in communication with the Premier regarding the establishment of a Sailors' Home for Wellington. Three hundred acres of the Okotuku block sold for £2375, nearly 300 per cent. aboTe the upset price. For the last two days the Court of Appeal has been occupied hi hearing arguments in the ca«e Morrin and another v Kissling. _ It is an Auckland case, and is of general importance from the fact that it raises the whole question of relationship between principals and agents. It appears that about Jane 4, 1877, plaintiffs retained and employed defendant for commission or reward to purchase for them a certain piece or parcel of .land situate in the Piako district, in the Colony of New Zealand, and known as the Maungatepare block. Defendant accepted said retainer, and purchased the flood as an agent for and on behalf of the plaintiffs, who hare always been, and are still, willing and offer to pay defendant the purchase money of the land, and a reasonable sum as well for his commission for purchasing same. In breach of said duty, as the said agent, defendant has obtained conveyance of said land in his own name, and claims the land as ; his own property, and refuses to acknowledge the plaintiffs' right to the same, and contends that to entitle the plaintiffs to the relief . asked for, the facts relied upon by plaintiffs must be manifested and proved by some writing signed, and as it is not alleged in ' the declaration that there is such a writing, it must be taken that there is no snen -writing. The Court lias reserved judgment. BLENHEIM, Nov. 15. A. M. Normanby, tailor, was charged at : the Resident Magistrate's Court with perjury in liis statement regarding his bankruptcy, . and was remanded to Monday. GitEVMQtrTir, Nov. 15. The Greymouth Coal Company's mine and ; plant was sold to-day at auction, by Mr W. B. Moss, for the sum of £11,800. 3lr J. A. Mackenzie, of Dunedin, is the purchaser. Dcxediit, Nov 15. ] The Committee, formed some months ago j to compel the removal of the fever hospital from the town belt, held a final meetirig this week, the object for which they were appointed having been effected.
