THE SUPERINTENDENCE
.c- • A number of our correspondents have broken out in rhyme. We select the two " least bad " out of some dozen specimens:— VILLIAM AND HIS DONKEY. " Gee Imp, Neddy," said costermonger Bill, " But pick your road vith caution, Neddy, There may be stones a rollin' down the hill, And then you'll spill your Bill — soh, steady 1 " Some people like to go a killing pace ; O'er hill and dale and rushing rivers; They go by steam, and ride a headlong race, Vich makes 'em smash their traps to shivers. " Now take it easy, Ned; vile on the road I'll sing a song and have a visile; I've neither yip, nor spur, nor bullock goad, So you may stop and take a thistle. " They vant to make us leave snug quarters, Ned, They've got another Bill already — A cove vot vonts to push and drive ahead, And take the reins ve've held so steady. " If from our happy sphere ye hold so dear A cruel fate should make us part, I vill not grieve, nor drop a single tear, If they -rill leave me Neddy and the cart."
