Petition to House

Bearing 168 signatures, the first of the petitions proposing that the issue of sohool text books should be subjeot to a system of ' tender was presented to the House on Friday afternoon by*t Mr A, J. Stailworthy (Coalition United, Eden). Petitioners state that the present oost of sohool text books ia unduly high, and impose a heavy burden on parents and they hold the view that if matter were written and prepared by or otherwise acquired by the Education Department so as to be its absolute property, and the books were produced and distrib-* uted under a system of open tender from the Department’s manuscript, a saving of not less than 33H per cent, on the present prices would be made to parents, Parliament is asked to take action to arrange for the alteration sought as from a date not later than December, 1933.
