Distressing Motor Accident

Golfers Injured.

The visit of a party af golfers from the Te Puke Golf Club to ■ Whakatane on Sunday had a most It v unfortunate termination, a motor accident on the return journey resulting in Messrs George, manager of the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand, and T, Rogers, af the Post Office staff, being somewhat seriously injured, They were travelling in company with Mr D. Veitch, who occupied the back seat with them, and Messrs W. E. Hookey and G. Farmer, who were in the front seat, the latter driving. The party left Whakatane at about 5.30. After travelling five miles they overtook another oar coming in the same direction in the vicinity of a bridge, which both negotiated safely. After crossing Mr Farmer’s car skidded and struok a concrete pole on the side of the road, the impact being so great that the rear portion of the vehicle was badly damaged, a wheel oame off, and the overturned Communication waa - established with Whakatane Dr Appleby came out and took Mr George back to the Wbakatane Hospital where it was found he had two ribs broken and was suffering from shock. The balance of the party were taken by Mr F. Reynolds to Pongakawa* where they were met by Mr J. Brown, who broughtthem through to Te Puke. Mr Rogers is confined to his bed, the extent of his *** injuries not yet being known.
