DOMINION’S NEED.
MORE IMMIGRATION
NO SURPLUS BRITISHERS.
“TAKING A RISK.”
[By Telegraph.—Press Association] AUCKLAND, April 13.
New Zealand’s lack of population was commented upon yesterday by Sir Montague Burton, managing director of one of England’s largest clothing businesses, with headquarters at Leeds. Ho is reputed to be one of flic largest, if not the largest, individual purchaser of New Zealand wool. He last visited the Dominion in October, ' 1936, as a delegate to the Federated l Chambers of Commerce Congress in Wellington. “There are strong views in the Dominions, I know; that If the gates aro opened to immigration, people' holding extreme views may "seek shelter here, and engage in subversive propaganda-,’’ he said. “One has to tgke that, risk, particularly in a developing country. Some who advocate keeping the padlock on would not appear to have given sufficient consideration to the fact that every able-bodied wqrk-willing new arrival is an asset, not a liability.”
America had been built up by people fleeing from religious persecution. Britain had never regretted ; offering asylum to the harassed Huguenots. Liberty and justice wfere the greatest of welding forces. “Recently I visited Italy, Germany, and the Soviet Union,” added Sir Mon-
tague. “They remind, one 6f huge concentration camps. Large numbers of people there and in other parts of Europe are anxious to emigrate. 1 suggest there is excellent material there for developing the Antipodes.”
