WHERE THEY STAND.

POSITION OF FARMERS.

GOVT. INSURANCE PROPOSALS.

UNION DELEGATES’ DISCUSSION. The question as to “just where the farmers stood” in relation to the Government’s health insurance proposals was asked by a delegate to the Northern Thames SutT-proviucial Executive of the Farmers’ Union meeting in Thames yesterday. During discussion on the topic, Mr. T. Considine, of Netherton, said that so far as he could gather the farmers were the last people who would be considered. It looked as though the farmer would get nothing, added the speaker, while he had a few cows. Other members of the community, said Mr. Considine, would be able to pass on the eost to them, but not so the farm-

In explanatory remarks, the provincial secretary, Mr. A. E. Robinson, commented that the scheme was not a proposal for superannuation for the whole population, but merely an oldage pension for indigent people. The Union, said Mr. Robinson, sought the best medical assistance for people in tho country. At present there was no means where the country man could get the best medical attention.

Under the Government’s present proposals the farmers were the people who were going to pay for the pensions, in the long run, while they them selves were pegged down to the prices they received for their produce sold on overseas markets.

It was decided, after further general discussion, that the matter be considered at the next executive meeting.
