Butter Box Mould.

SUCCESSFUL ELIMINATION. TREATMENT OF WOOD. ENGLISH SCIENTIST'S METHOD

(Special 10 Star).

AUCKLAND, April 3.

One of the pests of the dairy industry, a mould which grows on the insides of butter boxes and discolours their contents, will, it is hoped, be eliminated as the result of a discovery Avhieh has been made by an English scientist. This is a solution which, when applied to the timbe'j of the boxes, will prevent the growtb of mould.

Mr. E. Bongard, secretary of th? firm at Avhose request the scientist has been investigating the problem, stated that his firm has received from London samples of timber o» which the solution had been applied; and local scientists had been unable to cultivate mould on them even under the most favourable conditions. "Mould has been one of the worries of the industry ever since white pine was used for butter boxes," said Mr. Bongard. "In proportion to the amount of butter exported, the loss caused by mould it not great. Somo complaints have been received from England, but in these cases the mould has discoloured only the outside of the block of butter. When this is scraped away the remainder is quite good and saleable. No mouldy boxes are allowed to go overseas, but the mould grows in the boxes when they are improperly handled in England."
