Four men went to the rescue - ',";■' and one got hold of the girl, but she slipped from his grasp. Miss Skews narrowly missed sharing the face of her friends. The rescuers managed to y drag Pope to the shore, but all effort's to restore him failed, .though quite a number of doctors were on the scene, and also a nurse, who gave great assistance. :•, ,< Mr. Templeton, step-father to Miss Downey, noticed something going on. /. on the beach and helped with an hnprovised life line for some time, jS ignorance of who were endangered till * Pope's body was carried past him;' Ward, one of the rescuers, almost .' came to grief and was much distressed. . : "■.
