This day. The" Bouse met at 7:30 "pjfar-^*^ w!*^-<-Mr. O'Connor wanted the debate on the Representation Bill in Committee reported in Hansard. 7 •■ '-■ -• . The motion was negatived. Upon the committal of the Representation Bill, Clause 2 was postponed. The Government announced that they would not oppose alterations in the boundaries, but they could not accept all the proposals regarding additional members. A good deal of discussion ensued, much objection being taken to the provisions of the Bill generally, but especially regarding the member to Napier, Messrs. Bell and Macandrew saying Mataura deserved another member more than Napier;' r,f Mr O'Connor took similar ground regarding the Buller. Clauses three and four passed. Clause five created a remarkably long discussion^ Several, .amendments were proposed. v A number of members held that the best way to get rid of the question was to give the Thames and Dunedin an extra member each and drop the rest. The govern ment, West Coast members, and others opposed this. ■ % * ■ % 'Mr O'Neill moved that the Thanies'lbe allowed another member besides the one given in the Bill. Mr Jackson said if they would not do this that the Government should add a portion of ,fbe Waikato to the Thames, and give it another member. Sir Geo. Grey, Mr. Stafford, and others strongly supported the Thames Laving three members, and Sir George Grey threatened to keep up the discussion until the Government acceeded to the request. The amendment was ultimately lost by 37 to 21. ! j Mr. Sheohan moved that a member be given to Coromandel.. defeated by 30 to 23. Mr W. Kelly moved that Hawke's Bay be struck' out and' the South-East Coast District substituted. The Government supported the amendment. The discussion was kept up on this till 2.40 a.m., when progress was reported. It was then decided that in consequence of the members' ball, the House would adjourn at 7.30 that evening.
