LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.

WELLINGTON. [ Tuesday. I In the Legislative Council yesterday— j Mr Waterhouse moved :—" That, in I the opinion of the Council, the purchase of the native lands by the Government should, in due regard for the best interests of the colony, be conducted with the most scrupulous integrity and honour, and that therefore it is incumbent upon the Government to exercise the greatest care in the selection of agents for that important duty." Carried. Mr Menzies moved :—" That, •in the opiuion of this Council, it is expedient that the Government should bring in a bill this session to amend ' Tho Disqualification Act, 1870,' in order to bring the letter into conformity with the spirit of the Act." Carried. Mr Menzies moved:—"That as some doubts exist as to what might be the legal interpretation of the various provisions of ' The Disqualification Act, 1870,' it is expedient that any bill proposing to amend the same should bar the recovery of any penalties under the Act j in any way other than as the Amendment Act may direct."—The motion was negatived on the voices. Mr Acland was granted leave of absence for the remainder of the session. The following motion by Mr Kenny was lost:— " That, with a view to the settlement of the matter, the subject of the Piako Land Exchange Bill (No. 2), it is expedient in the opinion of this Council that that bill should be withdrawn by the Government, and that the Government should afford Mr Whitaker every facility and assistance in arranging with the natives for the surrey of the land for which he has been awarded a Crown grant by the Land Claims' Commissioner, or in otherwise effecting an equitable arrangement with the natives."
