BIRD IN HAND.

The drive towards the hill side of this claim is now in, according to the manager's measurement, 260 feet. The reef is well defined, and 2 feet 6 inches thick, lying in a good, easy country. The drive towards the sea is in 195 feet, but the reef is much broken ; still the leaders are anything but died out, neither is the country hard enough to kill them.. There, is one part of this drive that presents a most singular appearance. I thought it was from a shot that had ripped into the side of the drive, it was no such thing, it was the natural,, or unnatural, formation through which the drive had run. It presents the appearance of, a drive carelessly walled up. The rubble is sandstone, but the strangest feature of all is that it does not present the slightest appearance •of being water ridden or worn. Although-so near tfie beach, at the. time it was cut, the ground emitted a quantity of stinking gas, nonexplosive, yet most offensive. Beyond this break in the country, a good strong gold-bearing lode was found, and carried on till it ran out into the present broken stiing of leaders. The shaft is down below the lowest level 25 feet, but is at present in very tight country.
